Starkville Eateries of Yesteryear

Starkville Eateries of Yesteryear

There’s nothing better than driving through a small town and grabbing a bite to eat at the local hole-in-the-wall restaurant. These local hot spots offered the best-tasting food and, here in the south, the best southern charm and the sweetest of sweet teas. Unfortunately, the Bulldog foodscape has changed over the years, and some of the most beloved eateries and hangout spots have shuttered their doors and drifted off into legend and happy memories of yesteryear. Which of these old-time haunts do you remember going to?

Flo & Eddies

Flo & Eddie’s

Flo & Eddie’s. Good times. There was nothing quite like finishing up a long day of class, leaving your bags in your dorm, and heading out to this lively local bar on University Drive. This beloved bar featured live bands, great food, 2-for-1 Tuesdays, and a legendary bingo night.

Tragically, it was destroyed by a fire in the early morning hours on Thanksgiving morning in 2001. Flo & Eddie's may have had a tragic ending, but locals still cherish their fond memories of this one-of-a-kind community jewel.

Bulldog Deli

Bulldog Deli

Before the Cotton District’s retail and dining surge, Bulldog Deli was the hot spot for students and Starkville locals alike. If you’re an OG, you’ll remember their original location was where the parking lot for Bulldog Burger now sits. This former staple was the perfect place to grab signature sandwiches like the Blitz and the Big Nasty. The chips and rotel were pretty nice too.

If you were in a sandwich mood, our favorite was the Signature Chicken BLT with juicy oven-roasted chicken, delicious bistro sauce, hardwood smoked bacon, fresh lettuce, and tomato, and topped with the right amount of mayo and toasted cheese on focaccia bread. Those were the days.

Mazzio's Pizza

Mazzio’s Pizza

Who didn’t love MSU Mazzio's Pizza at the north end of Perry Cafeteria? Everyone loved it. That’s the right answer. Everyone. Their mouthwatering pizzas and lasagnas were perfect treats in between classes or on days off, and it was the perfect spot for a casual meal. Even better, if you never wanted to leave the comfort of your residence hall, Mazzio’s delivered all across campus. With its iconic neon sign and clock, it was impossible to miss the promise of good times and tasty meals.

Cheers

Cheers

Cheers Bar in Starkville, MS, was a beloved local spot with a rich history. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and classic bar vibes, Cheers had been a staple in the community for years. It was a great place to enjoy a drink, catch up with friends, and experience a bit of Starkville’s local charm. The bar often featured live music and events, making it a lively spot for both locals and visitors. Whether you were looking for a casual night out or a place to celebrate, Cheers offered a warm and inviting environment.

City Bagel

City Bagel

Sometimes, all a person really needs a good bagel to start the day off right. City Bagel Cafe was a charming and historic spot known for its freshly baked bagels and gourmet coffee. Once located at 511 University Drive, it offered a cozy and casual dining experience, perfect for breakfast or lunch.

The cafe was popular for its variety of bagel sandwiches, pasta dishes, and other homemade snacks. One of its best-kept secrets was from Thursday through Saturday nights, City Bagel had Italian nights and offered up arguably the best pizza in town. Hey, we said arguably!

With both indoor and outdoor seating, the unique eatery provided a relaxed atmosphere where you could enjoy a meal with friends or family. Oh, City Bagel, you are sorely missed.
