Types of Chapter Activities, Meetings, and Events

Social/Dinner

Informal Reception

An opportunity for fellowship which does not necessarily need a program.
Young Alumni Social
A kickoff or follow-up for a university function such as an athletic contest or a community-sponsored event which may have a university official as a guest.
An initial event in an area of high alumni and friend concentration which provides an opportunity to identify individuals who are interested in helping.
A preliminary event before a more formal social/dinner.
MSU Birthday Party (on February 28)

Breakfast or Luncheon

Usually suited for a smaller group.
Can host speakers for specific topics – i.e. Lunch-n-Learn, Breakfast with the Bulldogs
A good opportunity for a board planning meeting.

Cookout, Barbecue or Picnic

A good event for the entire family.
Generally a spring or summer event.
An excellent opportunity to introduce young people to the Mississippi State family and spirit.
Does not require a university speaker.
Great to tie in with established groups in the community.
MSU Day at the park or zoo.

Athletic / Sports Activities

Television game-watch party for a Bulldog athletic event.
Bus charter to a Bulldog athletic event.
MSU night with pro or semi-pro teams (get special ticket prices and recognition during game)
Competitions with other SEC schools or other conferences - SEC/ACC Bowling Tournament, SEC Football Kickoff gatherings

Community Service

Booth or table at local festival
MSU float in a parade
Salvation Army bell ringing
Soup Kitchen service
Adopt-a-Highway
Reading program at elementary schools or day care centers
Collections for various charities - canned foods for Food Banks, shoes for Soles 4 Souls, coat drive
Marathons - sponsor participants, hand out water or food, work registration
Adopt a school or class - many need help with supplies or volunteers
Hospitals - Parents Night Out at Children's Hospital, telethon volunteers
SEC Competitions - Canned Food Drive, United Way
Blood Drive (chapter sponsored or joint groups sponsored)
Teams - Relay for Life, Heart Walk
Habitat for Humanity
City Beautification - park clean-up or builds
Signage at ball parks
Find a community organization that is looking for any volunteers.

Fundraising

Student Recruiting (coordinated with Recruitment Staff & Alumni Staff)

Bus charter to an on-campus student recruiting event.
Prospective student or honor student reception, dinner or party.
"Send-Off" Party (held in July and August for incoming freshmen, prospective students, parents and alumni)
In-home recruiting party for local students.
Host MSU booth/table at a college fair or career fair.
Present academic scholarship award at high school awards program.
Writing prospective students encouraging them to apply/visit/attend MSU.
Join the Alumni Recruiting Network through the Office of Admissions & Scholarships.
